1924 Picinisco - Fermata Cuculo - I have been shown the place along the Via Colleruta where there is a patch of land called Cuculo and that this is where the photo was taken. The piano was being taken from my great grandfather's house in the Casale to my grandfather's house in the Via San Martino. The Piano was manhandled along the rough limestone track by a large group of men in return for copious refreshments. The photo is also of interest as it shows two of the men wearing the traditional leggings and sandals described in the letter from D.H. Lawrence to Rosalind Baynes; written on 16 Dec. 1919. Standing to the right of the piano and looking rather incongruous in a dark suit and black bow tie is Giacinto De Marco who was 18 at the time of this photo.

When I stayed with my grandparents in Picinisco in 1959, there was no fresh cows milk to be had but once a week a lady would knock on the door selling Goats milk. A tiny amount of the precious liquid would be purchased as my grandparents had aquired the habit of taking afternoon tea during their years in England.

Country Procession - not an uncommon sight in Picinisco. A lot of the hamlets in which these families lived were without any amenities. Walking to the church and festa was the only alternative. The path is an old mule track (mulattiera) which connects the Casale to a piece of land called 'Cuculo' on the via Colleruta.
